Nifelvind (dt. Hell wind ) is the fifth album by the Finnish metal band Finntroll . It was published in Finland on February 17, 2010 and in Germany on February 19, 2010 by Century Media .

The limited edition of Nifelvind entered the German album charts at number 31 and the Finnish charts at number 8.

Recording and publication

Nifelvind was recorded at Sonic Pump Studio in Helsinki from July to September 2009 and mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios .

The original title was Mot Skuggornas Värld , but the band decided on the name Nifelvind .

The cover of the album was designed by Skrymer like the previous ones. The texts, written in Swedish , come from founding member Katla.

The album was released as a regular CD, as a limited box set version, which, in addition to the CD, contains a beer mat and a flag in the cover design. In addition, a tour edition of the album with a new cover design and a bonus cover CD was released on September 23, 2011 .

style

Unlike on the previous albums, none of the lyrics on Nifelvind are about trolls, the word troll doesn't even appear. For the first time, Finntroll mainly refers to death and themes from Norse mythology . The song Den Frusna Munnen deals with the encounter between a dying man and the goddess of death Hel, from whose ice-cold mouth (Swedish : frusen mun ) he receives the kiss of death. In the song Under Bergets Rot , the lyrical self discovers the entrance to the underworld (see Helheim ) at the foot of a mountain in snow and ice. The song Ett Norrskensdåd describes the lust for murder of a person whose character is portrayed with reference to the hellhound Garm .

With the new texts, which refer strongly to mythology, Finntroll are approaching the genre of pagan metal , which they only did before by letting trolls fight against Christianity in their texts.

Alex Straka from the online magazine Powermetal.de describes the instrumentation consisting of a Humppa accordion, banjo, violin etc. as varied and intelligent. Sabine Langner finds the additional use of orchestral elements "conspicuous but still relatively unobtrusive". She describes the style as black or death metal .
