Midnattens Widunder is the 1999 debut album by Finnish metal band Finntroll .

History of origin

After the demo Rivfader , the record company Spinefarm Records signed Finntroll. Before that, the members Samu “Beast Dominator” Ruotsalainen (drums), Samuli “Skrymer” Ponsimaa (second guitarist), Henri “Trollhorn” Sorvali (keyboard) and Sami “Tundra” Uusitalo (bass) got on board. Lyrically the album is about the struggle of the trolls against Christianity , from which the north is to be liberated.

Music genre

The album is still deeply rooted in Black Metal , but already contains the folk and humppa influences typical of the band . The songs already contained on the previous demo are compositionally simpler and only use keyboards for ostinati , which creates a more repetitive character. The newly composed pieces, on the other hand, are more sophisticated and focus more on the keyboard as the melody-leading instrument.

Svartberg ( Black Mountain )

The song is about the troll people who move away from the people to the north. You are looking for a black mountain in which the troll king Rivfader lives and under which lies the realm of the trolls, which is untouched by humans. The Christian faith that is viewed as false and hostile does not exist there.

Rivfader

Rivfader describes a prophecy that says that the troll king of the same name has returned and will wake up from his long sleep when the white serpent appears to crush the Nordic Christians.

Vätteanda ( Kobold mood )

It describes how bloodthirsty goblins fight their way out of the mountain to tear flesh and kill people in the name of unchristian faith.

Bastuvisan ( The Sauna Song )

The sauna style initially has a radio play-like beginning in which you can hear sauna-typical noises. You can hear the scratching that occurs when the body is “chopped off” with birch twigs while taking a sauna in order to stimulate blood circulation (see sauna culture ). Then you can hear the sauna door open and a deep cry. This is followed by the musical part of the piece with singing. Two priests, Åmund and Kettil, are sitting in the sauna when suddenly a troll breaks in, Åmund cuts off his ears and beats Kettil until the sauna collapses.

Blodnatt (Bloody Night )

The song "Blutnacht" tells how the lyric self gets ready for battle, sharpening its sword, oiling chain mail, braiding the beard and tarring the face. At sunset it wants to ride a wolf to the church gate and kill people or Christians ("Prästdräpe" = murder of priests) there.

Later promotional photos of the band, on which they have black stripes on their faces, are reminiscent of the tarred war paint.

Midnattens Widunder ( Monster of the Midnight )

The song is a declaration of war on Christ, who should literally "disappear" from the top of the people, otherwise he will be killed by the trolls with the sword.

Segersång ( winning song )

The winning song describes how the Lamb of Christ flees from the forces of nature and how the trolls celebrate and sing hymns of praise. The trolls celebrate the moon and the death of Christ who was killed with a sword.

Svampfest ( mushroom festival )

Svampfest is an instrumental keyboard piece.
