The Bothy Band (also known as The Bothies for short ) was an Irish folk band that existed from 1974 to 1979. To this day it is considered to be a style defining element for many folk bands.

Origin of the band name

Bothy bands were groups of unmarried farm workers in Scotland in the 19th century who lived in huts ( bothies ) and made music to supplement their salaries.

Band history

The Bothy Band was founded in 1974 as a band of amateur musicians to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gael Linn record label . At that time Paddy Glackin ( fiddle ) and Tony MacMahon ( accordion ) belonged to the band. However, they left the band in 1975 when the rest of the musicians made music their profession. The cast included Matt Molloy ( flute and tin whistle ), Paddy Keenan ( uillean pipes and tin whistle), Dónal Lunny ( bouzouki , guitar , bodhrán and production ), Triona Ni Dhomnaill ( harpsichord , clavinet and vocals ) and her brother Mícheál Ó Domhnaill (Guitar and vocals). Tommy Peoples replaced Paddy Glackin and was in turn replaced by Kevin Burke in 1976.

The Bothy Band's first album, The Bothy Band , was released in 1975 and received good reviews. It was re-released decades later. The second album was 1976 Old Hag You Have Killed Me , which was even more successful. The Bothy Band's third album, Out of the Wind, Into the Sun , released in 1977 , was their last studio album. In 1979 the live album After Hours (Live in Paris) was released .

After the band broke up

After the Bothy Band broke up, their members played in numerous other Irish bands, such as the Chieftains and Moving Hearts .

In 1983 a best of album was released, and in 1995 a previously unpublished concert recording on Radio BBC .

Mícheál Ó Domhnaill died in 2006 as a result of a fall.

Even today the music of the Bothy Band is considered to be a style-defining element. Irish traditional music was played with strong dynamics using traditional and modern instruments, but also bouzouki, originally from Greece , at a high artistic level.
