The International University Vienna was a private provider of educational offers in Vienna , Austria with an evangelical orientation. It was founded in 1980 as the "European Christian College" with its headquarters in Vienna. It was the first and so far only private university whose accreditation has been revoked by the Austrian Accreditation Council. In May 2011, the Vienna Commercial Court ordered the closure of the sponsoring association after the bankruptcy's reorganization had failed.

The operation was temporarily taken over by the Serbian megatrend private university as a branch called "Megatrend International University of Vienna". This also went into bankruptcy and was closed in February 2013.

Revocation of accreditation as a private university

The IU Vienna was briefly accredited as a private university in Austria , but this status was revoked by the Austrian Accreditation Council effective July 31, 2003, as the necessary requirements for accreditation were not met. This was the first and so far only revocation of an accreditation of a university in Austria.

The first accreditation took place on January 4, 2001. Although the UniAkkG provides for the accreditation period to be five years, due to some critical points (permanent staff, recruiting procedures, research at the institution, library), accreditation was only granted for three years. In 2002 the withdrawal of the accreditation was announced and finally decided in March 2003. In addition to the above-mentioned deficiencies, the reason given was that the financial management was incomprehensible and the practice of admission to the course did not meet international admission requirements. In the interests of the students, the revocation did not come into force until July 31, 2003. This should give the students of the International University the opportunity to complete the semester with the planned credits and to switch to other universities.

"Christian Dimension"

According to their own statements, the training was based on Christian principles with an emphasis on Bible study. This "Christian dimension" was u. a. expressed by the following aspects:

  • Bible study is an integral part of training.
  • Management and administration of the IU as well as some of the staff profess the Christian faith.
  • Meetings (e.g. graduation ceremonies) are characterized by Bible reading and prayer.
  • Donations from people who believe in the value of Christian education play a major role.
  • The IU provides opportunities for Christian prayer and worship.

Legal status of degrees

Academic degrees acquired at the IU Vienna that were awarded during the accreditation period (January 4, 2001 to July 31, 2003) are considered Austrian academic degrees. You can use it for B. can also be managed legally in Germany and without an indication of origin. At the end of 2002 (the last full year of accreditation) the IU Vienna had 133 students.

Due to the revocation of the accreditation, the International University Vienna was not allowed to award any academic degrees since July 31, 2003. However, the training continued. According to earlier information from the IU Vienna, its Bachelor , Master and doctoral programs are licensed by the US state of Alabama (Department of Postsecondary Education). The Alabama Community College System listed The International University in Montgomery, Alabama, on their website as one of the post-secondary education institutions licensed by the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education to train Alabama citizens. However, the website emphasizes that this licensing does not mean an accreditation. The Oregon Office of Degree Authorization lists the International University Vienna as an "Unaccredited Degree Supplier" and recommends prospective students and employers to check the legality of the use of the degrees awarded by such institutions beforehand.

An article in the daily newspaper "Die Presse" reported on December 15, 2008 that academic degrees may not be used, and that recognition in Alabama was not carried out by a public accreditation authority.

Due to the withdrawal of Austrian accreditation, the International University Vienna is not recognized as a university in Germany either.
