Matt Molloy (born January 12, 1947 in Ballaghaderreen , County Roscommon , Ireland) is an Irish flautist .

Life

Molloy comes from a family with a great musical tradition. He began to learn the flute at the age of eight and won the All-Ireland Flute Championship at the age of 17 and achieved first recognition in the National Fleadh Cheoil and Oireachtas . In the early 1970s he moved to Dublin and met many musicians from the scene here, including Paddy Moloney from the Chieftains . After his wedding, he first had a job at Aer Lingus before co-founding the later legendary Bothy Band in 1975 . The other members were Dónal Lunny (ex- Planxty ), Paddy Keenan, Triona NiDhomhnaill and Micheal O'Dhomhnaill. In four and a half years the band released four albums.

After the breakup in 1978, Matt played briefly with the reformed band Planxty, which however could no longer build on their old successes with their albums. After two albums and a tour, Molloy got out. When Michael Tubridy and Seán Potts left the Chieftains in 1979, Paddy Moloney invited him to the vacant flute seat and Matt Molloy said yes.

The first album with Molloy was Chieftains 9: Boil The Breakfast Early . Since then, Matt Molloy has been a member of the Chieftains and has appeared on all of the band's albums. The highlight of a Chieftains concert has long been Molloy's solo appearance with The Mason's Apron (heard on the live album An Irish Evening ).

During his time as a professional musician, Matt Molloy has recorded several solo albums and has been involved in many projects.

In addition to his music career, Matt Molloy has been running his own pub in Westport , County Mayo , called Matt Molloy’s , which often has music sessions.
