Hilton Schilder (* 1959 in Lotus River , Cape Town ) is a South African musician ( piano , also guitar , mouthbow , mbira and other instruments) who first became known in the field of Cape Jazz .

Live and act

Schilder grew up in a family of musicians (his father is the jazz pianist and band leader Tony Schilder ). He started early to play in bands in the carnival and disco area. In the 1980s, he and Mac McKenzie founded The Genuines , which specialized in the Goema music of the Cape Province. He led experimental concept bands like African Dream and Iconoclast (with Victor Ntoni and Vusi Khumalo ), in which he was also concerned with combining traditional South African music with contemporary genres. Robbie Jansen kept bringing him to his Sons of Table Mountain . In addition, he led his own groups, with whom he also appeared at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival , and went on tour with Johannes Enders . His first album under his own name No Turning Back (2003) was nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA) in the category “best contemporary jazz album” . With Alex van Heerden he founded the duo RockArt , which moves in the direction of acoustic and electronic minimal jazz and has also performed in Switzerland. With Mac McKenzie, he has launched projects such as Namakwa , the District Six Band and The Goema Captains of Cape Town in recent years . In 2008 he had the opportunity to present his various activities as Artist in Residence at the Bird's Eye Jazz Club in Basel .
