Geir Lysne

Geir Øystein Lysne (born October 9, 1965 in Trondheim ) is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone), composer and leader of a big band.

Lysne studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo (1988–92). He played together with Helge Sunde in the Oslo Grove Company , which was awarded the Spellemann Prize (1990), before founding his own formation, the Geir Lysne Listening Ensemble. For this ensemble he writes "no big band music in the classical sense, but a conglomerate of odd jazz rock , folkloristic explosions, harsh tin tirades, spicy noises, Far Eastern triphop and - of course - jazz in almost all forms of play."

In addition, Lysne has appeared as a composer and conductor of the NDR Bigband , the HR Bigband , the Danish Klüvers Big Band and other ensembles. He was a lecturer in jazz arrangements and composition at the University of Oslo ; since 2010 he has been Professor of Arrangement at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

Prizes and awards

In 2000 he was nominated for the Norwegian Tono Prize for the best jazz composition of the year. In 2004 he received the state work grant for composers. His album Boahjenásti - the North Star was awarded the 2006 German Record Critics' Prize. In 2013 the album Big Band , which he arranged and recorded by the NDR Bigband with Stefano Bollani , won an Echo Jazz award as the best big band album. From 2013 to 2015 he was composer in residence at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences .
