Hanne Hukkelberg (born April 1979 in Kongsberg , Norway ) is a Norwegian composer , singer and multi-instrumentalist in the fields of jazz , electro folk, indie rock and experimental music.

Life

During her youth and while studying jazz music, Hanne Hukkelberg was a singer in eleven band formations, ranging from jazz, free jazz, folk to rock music, heavy metal (including funeral ). In Norway, in addition to studying classical music, there is also jazz. She decided on the latter. Her instruments are the voice, the piano , the drums and the guitar . After completing her master's degree at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo , she teaches and continues to be musically active with many projects.

Hukkelberg started composing music for theater and film productions.

For her first solo album Little Things , which came out in the original Norwegian version in March 2004, she collected city and nature sounds for two years. She built this into her compositions, which she recorded with musician friends and normal instruments in the Propeller studio in Oslo. The album received a lot of praise, especially in the English-speaking world.

In 2006, a scholarship enabled her to spend six months in the Berlin art scene Prenzlauer Berg . There she collected and shaped the song and music material for her second solo work, published in September 2006. It is named after its alleged address at the time in Berlin , Rykestr . 68 . The album brought her fame in Oslo and the Norwegian Grammy Award Spellemannprisen 2006. The single A Cheater's Armory has since been filmed in a bizarre way by an animator and is available on YouTube.

In April 2007, Hanne Hukkelberg went on a European tour through Germany, Italy, France and the Benelux countries with four accompanying musicians who were friends. The line-up included drums, bass, keyboards, accordion, electric guitar and various special sound tools.

Music and lyrics

While the Guardian reviewer about the album Rykestr. 68 speaks of "unclassifiable", the TAZ writer elegantly called it a "Folkindietronik" record, "laptop pop with jazz sprinkles, a lot of electronic stuff and some folk". The Pixies cover version, Break My Body (the only cover on the disc), is unanimously highlighted by the reviewers as trumps everything known.

The music - relaxed, varied songs to dark, melancholy lyrics - is melodious, full of allusions and images.

“When I make music, I have pictures in my head. The images that emerge from the music are part of it. I spin stories out of it. "

- Hanne Hukkelberg, quoted from Die Zeit 16/2007
