Brynjar Hoff

Brynjar Hoff (born October 30, 1940 ) is a Norwegian oboist.

Life

Hoff began playing the oboe at the age of ten and became principal oboist with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen . In addition, he worked as a soloist with the Trondheim Chamber Orchestra , with which he also had radio appearances.

When the Norwegian Opera was founded under Kirsten Flagstad in 1958 , Hoff was hired as the first solo oboist in the opera orchestra. In the same year he made his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra with a performance of an oboe concerto by Tomaso Albinoni .

In 1959 Hoff founded the Oslo Wind Quintet , with which he appeared in his own radio broadcasts and chamber music programs in the following years. He also worked as a soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic , the Oslo City Orchestra and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra . In 1971 he founded another wind ensemble, the Oslo Wind Soloists .

1980 Hoff gave sixteen concerts in the USA, a. a. with Camilla Wicks and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra . The following year he recorded four Norwegian oboe concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Per Dreier . In 1982 he made his first appearance at Wigmore Hall . This was followed by tours of Spain, England, Russia and the USA, where he made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1986 .

In the course of his musical career, Hoff played practically all of the classical oboe literature, including concerts by Albinoni, Mozart , Haydn , Vaughan Williams , Scarlatti , Marcello and Nystedt . He has also given numerous world premieres of contemporary compositions such as Trygve Madsen's oboe concerto with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under Mariss Jansons and works by Egil Monn-Iversen and Antonio Bibalo . In total, more than sixty works were composed for him. As a soloist, Hoff recorded about thirty albums. He has also made a name for himself as a jazz musician (e.g. Rainer Brüninghaus Frei blown , 1980, but also collaboration with Silje Nergaard and Pål Thowsen ).

In 1999 Hoff was awarded the Royal Order of Merit in Gold for his life's work.
