Camilla Dolores Wicks (born August 9, 1928 in New York City ) is an American-Norwegian violinist and music teacher.
Life
The daughter of the violinist and music teacher Ingwald Wicks ( Ingvald Varhaugvik ) grew up in California and New York. She had her first violin lessons from her father and then studied at the Juilliard School with Louis Persinger and Henry Temianka . She made her debut appearance in New York in 1942. She then appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras in the United States such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra .
In 1946 the family moved to Norway, from where Wicks was very active touring across Europe. Highlights of this time were the performance and recording of Jean Sibelius' violin concerto in Helsinki with the conductor Sixten Ehrling and the performance of Beethoven's violin concerto in 1953 in New York under Bruno Walter .
After marrying an American businessman, she lived in the United States again. She had five children, which meant that she had to reduce her concert schedule considerably. From 1966 she resumed her activities in full. She studied his violin concerto with Ernest Bloch and performed the violin concertos by Harald Sæverud and Klaus Egge in Carnegie Hall . Bjarne Brustad composed his fourth violin concerto for her, which she performed in 1968 with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert Blomstedt . Her recording of William Walton's Violin Concerto with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under Juri Simonow also received international attention .
From 1974 to 1976 Wicks was professor for violin at the Norwegian Academy of Music . She then taught at the San Francisco Conservatory and Conservatory, the University of Michigan , Rice University in Houston and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. Her students include violinists Stephan Barratt-Due , Eivind Aadland , Alf Årdal and Henning Kraggerud . In 1998 she was made a knight of the Kongelege Norske Fortenstordenen for her services to Norwegian music .
