From 1973 Ehrling lived permanently in New York. At the Juilliard School of Music there , he worked from 1973 to 1987 as the head of the conducting courses (among the best-known of his students are Myung-Whun Chung , JoAnn Falletta , Andrew Litton and Andreas Delfs ). In 1973 Ehrling also made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera.

Ehrling also worked as musical advisor and first guest conductor of the Denver Symphony Orchestra (1978–1985) and as artistic advisor to the San Diego Symphony Orchestra (1985–1988). In 1993 Ehrling became chief conductor and musical advisor to the three orchestras of the Manhattan School of Music .

From 1974 to 1976 Ehrling also held the post of chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra .
