Andreas Delfs (born August 30, 1959 in Flensburg ) is a German conductor . He is Honorary Conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

life and career

Andreas Delfs was born in Flensburg as the youngest of three brothers. He received piano lessons and music theory lessons from the age of five. He studied at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater with Christoph von Dohnányi and Aldo Ceccato and finished his studies there in 1981. In 1979 he was appointed director of the Hamburg University Orchestra and at the same time assisted at the Hamburg State Opera . From 1980 to 1981 he directed the Harvestehuder Sinfonieorchester Hamburg . He continued his studies from 1982 at the Juilliard School with the conductors Jorge Mester (* 1935) and Sixten Ehrling and graduated in 1984 with the master’s examination.

From 1984 to 1995 he was director of the Swiss Youth Symphony Orchestra . In the USA he worked for a short time as co-conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Lorin Maazel . From 1995 to 2000 he was chief conductor of the Lower Saxony State Orchestra in Hanover, in 2001 he was appointed chief conductor of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, which he led until 2004. Since then, apart from his concert tours, he has lived in the USA. From 1997 to 2009 he was director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and has been its honorary conductor ( conductor laureate ) since the 2009 season . In 1999 he went on a concert tour with the orchestra to Cuba, the first by a US orchestra since 1962.

Since the 2007/2008 concert season, he had a contract as chief conductor of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, which was dissolved in 2010 when the orchestra went bankrupt. Since 2015 he has been the conductor and artistic director of the Temple University Symphony Orchestra at Temple's Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia , where he also teaches.

Delfs has given concerts as a guest conductor with numerous international orchestras, including a. with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra , the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , the DR SymfoniOrkestret, the Netherlands Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra , the San Francisco Symphony , the Los Angeles Philharmonic , the Sydney Symphony Orchestra , the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler-Orchester Wien , the Calgary Philharmonic, the Copenhagen Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Andreas Delfs is married and has four children. His mother was the popular actress Renate Delfs (1925-2018). In 1976 he was together with her candidate in Rudi Carrell's program "Amlauf Band". He lives in upstate New York .
