Yuri Ivanovich Simonov

Juri Iwanowitsch Simonow ( Russian Ю́рий Ива́нович Си́монов ; born March 4, 1941 in Saratov , Soviet Union ) is a Russian conductor. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Nikolai Rabinowitsch and was then assistant to the conductor Yevgeny Alexandrowitsch Mrawinski with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic .

Simonov found his first job as a conductor at the Bolshoi Theater in 1969 and was promoted to chief conductor a year later, in February 1970. At the time he was the youngest conductor to ever lead the Bolshoi Theater orchestra. After his contract expired in 1985, he founded the Maly State Orchestra of the USSR in 1986 and gave guest performances with it not only in the Soviet Union but also in Germany, Poland, Hungary and Italy. In 1998 he moved to the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra as music director . At the same time he held the same position at the Orchester national de Belgique in Brussels from 1994 to 2002 .
