Donald Hunsberger
Donald Hunsberger (born August 2, 1932 in Souderton , Pennsylvania ) is an American conductor and arranger . From 1965 to 2002 he was director of the Eastman Wind Ensemble ; he is also a professor emeritus for conducting and ensembles at the Eastman School of Music . Hunsberger's work has contributed significantly to the development of the symphonic wind orchestra .
Life
Donald Hunsberger was born on August 2, 1932 in Souderton, Pennsylvania. In 1950 he began studying trombone at the Eastman School of Music with Emory Remington. In 1952 Hunsberger joined the Eastman Wind Ensemble, newly founded by Frederick Fennell . He was also arranger and solo trombonist with the United States Marine Band from 1954 to 1958 . In 1962, Hunsberger was appointed conductor of the Eastman Symphony Band ; at the same time he became coordinator of the instrumental ensemble program. After Clyde Roller left in 1965, Hunsberger took over the management of the Eastman Wind Ensemble founded in 1952 . During his time as a conductor he made numerous recordings, including an album with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis , which was nominated for a Grammy in 1987 for best instrumental solo recording. He also went on concert tours to Japan , Taiwan and Southeast Asia . From 1985 to 1987, Hunsberger served as president of the College Band Directors National Association . In 2002, Hunsberger handed over the position of conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble to Mark Scatterday.

Hunsberger created numerous arrangements of classical and modern works for wind orchestra . The most important arrangements include:

Since 1967 Hunsberger worked with MCA Music , where he was in charge of the MCA Symphonic Wind Ensemble Editions series and was the editor of the newsletter The Wind Ensemble . His goal was to sharpen the profile of the Wind Ensemble, especially with regard to instrumentation , performance practice , voice distribution and timbre .
In addition, Hunsberger dealt with the background music for silent films and performed the resulting works as a conductor.
