history
The orchestra was founded in 1952 by Frederick Fennell at the Eastman School of Music . With this orchestra, Frederick Fennell founded modern symphonic wind music, in which each orchestral part is played by only one musician and the original compositions for this form of orchestra are preferred to transcriptions of orchestral works. The Eastman Wind Ensemble has premiered more than 150 compositions, including works by Bernard Rands and Joseph Schwantner .
In 1987 the ensemble was nominated for a Grammy Award for the best performance of an instrumental solo (with or without orchestra) in their 1986 album Carneval , which was created in collaboration with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis .
