biography

Christian Wallumrød was born and raised in Kongsberg and comes from a musical family; the singer Susanna Wallumrød , the drummer Fredrik Wallumrød and the keyboardist and pianist David Wallumrød are his siblings; at the age of twelve he began to play the piano. At the age of 15 he came into contact with jazz for the first time through his piano teacher. At first he was less interested in the jazz legends from the past, but more in the connection between jazz and z. B. modern pop music. Between 1990 and 1992 he then studied jazz at the Music Conservatory in Trondheim . After completing his studies, he immediately gained experience playing with well-known Norwegian musicians such as Bugge Wesseltoft , Nils Petter Molvær , Audun Kleive and Jon Christensen . From 1993 to 1997 he was a member of the jazz punk ensemble of guitarist Jon Eberson . After these years of apprenticeship Christian Wallumrød devotes himself more and more to his own projects. With a contract with the well-known ECM label from Manfred Eicher , he founded the Christian Wallumrød Trio together with trumpeter Arve Henriksen and percussionist Hans-Kristian Kjos Sørensen as well as the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, again together with Arve Henriksen, plus drummer Per Oddvar Johansen and the violinist Nils Økland . In the album Sofienberg Variations, which was praised by the trade press and recorded in the eponymous Sofienberg Church in Oslo , the ensemble is additionally supported by saxophonist Trygve Seim .

Wallumrød also plays in three other groups: the trio Close Erase together with bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Per Oddvar Johansen, the Rosseland / Wallumrød / Eick trio with singer Elin Rosseland and bassist Johannes Eick and in the band Generator X des Drummer Audun Kleive. Since 2002 Christian Wallumrød has also had an artistic partnership with the well-known singer Sidsel Endresen . Their last joint project is the CD Merriwinkle from 2004, in which they break down song structures and texts into words and syllables and put them back together again on an experimentally improvised level. They are supported by the sound tinkerer Helge Sten, known from the band Supersilent . Between 2004 and 2010 he worked with a classically cast ensemble. Currently Christian Wallumrød also plays in the quartet formation Dans Les Arbres together with Ivar Grydeland, Ingar Zach and the French clarinetist Xavier Charles ; After the self-titled debut CD in 2007 on ECM, the quartet presented the successor Canopée in 2012 , before the third album was released in 2017 on the Hubro label .
