Nils Økland (born January 7, 1961 ) is a Norwegian violinist ( Hardangerfiedel ) and composer who works in neo-folk, electronic, experimental and jazz music.

Live and act

Økland is the brother of the guitarist and trumpeter Torbjørn Økland . He played in the 1980s with the formations Løver og Tigre (1983), Balkansemblet (1984–1995 and again in 2005) and in a duo with jazz bassist Bjørnar Andresen (1986). He worked in the field of folk and rock music in the 1980s, a . a. with Bent Erlandsen's Cafe Ensemble, Anne Grete Preus ( Fullmåne , with Nils Petter Molvær ), the formation deLillos ( Hjernen Er Alene ; 1989). He played with Arvid Gangsø and Jorun Hafstad in the trio Skinn og Bein . With improvisation band Supersilent he had an appearance in the BBC Radio 3 telecast The Wire Live Sessions (2000); Økland described the concert program as one

virtuoso of the traditional Harding fiddle with a solo set that lights up the gray area separating folk forms from free improvisation and modern composition.

In 1996 he presented his debut solo album with Blå harding . Bris (published on Rune Grammofon 2004) contained Økland's own compositions and music for Jon Fosse's play Melankolika , which is based on the tragic life of the artist Lars Hertervig (1830–1902).

In 2009 he recorded the album 1982 in an improvisation trio with the pianist / harmonium player Sigbjørn Apeland and the drummer Øyvind Skarbo , followed by a duo album in 2011 with Sigbjørn Apeland, Lysøen : Hommage à Ole Bull ( ECM ), as a homage to the violinist and composer Ole Bull (1810-1880).

Økland also worked on recordings of Christian Wallumrød ( A Year From Easter , ECM 2004), Helene Bøksle ( Elverhøy 2006), Alf Cranner ( Som En Rose: Alf Cranner Tolker Robert Burns , 2004), the folk jazz trio BNB ( Ein Song Frå Dei Utsunge Stunder 2005, with Berit Opheim and Bjørn Kjellemyr ), David Rothenberg ( Ürgne Kaja (Primal Echo) , 2007) and the experimental band by Robert Jürjendal , Petri Kuljuntausta & David Rothenberg ( 3 Corners of the World , 2008) with, also with Benedicte Maurseth , Knut Hamre , Kari Bremnes , Karoline Krüger and Hans Fredrik Jacobsen . As the director of the Ole Bull Akademiet , Økland organized concerts in the Concerts Norway program .
