action

English teacher Jack Marcus, a former celebrated writer, teaches at a New England school and still dreams of his former glory. Seldom does he mince his words and, out of sheer frustration, he also likes to drink a glass from his disinterested students. When the situation is already complicated enough, the uncompromising art teacher Dina Delsanto turns up at the school. An energetic competition quickly ensues with her; because she is convinced that the visual arts are far superior to language. Of course, Jack does not accept this without objection. A real battle of images and words is sparked, in which the students are also included. And in the end, Jack takes it too far. When he is about to be fired because of his drinking, he does something unforgivable to prevent the threatened sacking.

reception

Regarding the competition of the arts, Manfred Lauffs described this film on filmrezension.de as quite “dialogue-heavy” and as “a new edition of those screwball comedies in which Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn used to duel each other. And in the modern version, too, the main actors turn it up and show themselves in the best of spectacle mood. Owen [...] is the literary star with astonishingly versatile facial expressions. Juliette Binoche fascinates as a cold beauty. [...] The verbal battles are passionate, brilliant, often funny and always pointed and [...] the director [...] gives all actors great opportunities to develop. "The critic also criticized" the somewhat exaggerated construction of the conflict ".

Art and film draw the following conclusion: Although “puns and the chemistry between the protagonists” are correct, “the academic-romantic comedy by Hollywood old-school master Fred Schepisi is rather leisurely.”
