MVGmeinRad (pronounced: MVG - my bike ) is a station-based bike rental system of the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) in the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz , which was introduced on April 21, 2012 . The bike rental system is available to registered users at any time . According to MVG managing director Jochen Erlhof on March 24, 2016, it is the most successful rental bike system in Germany after StadtRAD Hamburg .

history

In 2008 the Mainz city council decided to introduce a bike rental system. MVG, which is close to the city, developed a corresponding concept and one year later was able to take first place among 44 applicants in the competition “Innovative public bicycle rental systems - new mobility in cities” by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development . As a result, Mainz received funding from the federal government of 1.9 million euros.

Former cyclist Tina Liebig has been the project manager since December 2009 . The start of the test phase began with 40 bike stations and over 100 testers in July 2011.

Locations

Detail of an MVGmeinRad station

The first nine test stations were set up in July 2011 at the main train station in front of the MVG “Verkehrs Center”, town hall , town hall , Stadtwerke , MVG, Bismarckplatz , Nordhafen (bicycle workshop), at the Höfchen and at the citadel . By autumn 2011 the system had been expanded to around 50 stations with 400 bikes. After a successful test phase, the system was put into regular operation on April 21, 2012 and has since been expanded step by step.

In the first year after commissioning, the over 100 rental stations are mainly in the city center of Mainz (old town and new town) as well as in the districts of Bretzenheim, Finthen, Gonsenheim, Hartenberg-Münchfeld, Hechtsheim, Laubenheim, Mombach, Oberstadt and Weisenau. In the remaining districts of Drais, Ebersheim, Lerchenberg and Marienborn there are no stations yet (as of April 2013). These should only be connected to the system at a later point in time, when the inner city area is sufficiently covered.

There are also bicycle stations in Budenheim and in the neighboring Hessian state capital Wiesbaden in the former districts of Mainz , Kastel and Kostheim on the right bank of the Rhine . The bicycle stations that were located in Bodenheim were dismantled after just over a year due to a lack of demand.

MVG has wanted to expand the network on the right bank of the Rhine in the Wiesbaden districts of Amöneburg , Biebrich and Schierstein since 2012 . According to the urban development department, the Hessian state capital is aiming for a bike rental system for the entire Wiesbaden urban area, taking into account the special local conditions, together with Mainz and is holding talks with various providers. In addition to local bike rentals from Wiesbaden, this also included the already established Nextbike , Call-a-Bike and JCDecaux ( Vélib ' and Vélo'v ) systems. A decision about the system and provider should have been made in 2014. In the meantime, the AStA of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences took care of 150 rental bikes for Wiesbaden, first with Call a Bike and later with nextbike . Since July 2018 there have been 500 orange bikes at 50 stations in the Wiesbaden city area under "meinRad Wiesbaden", which are compatible with the Mainz system.

Eight stations in Ingelheim am Rhein have also been served since 2018 .

Loans and costs

The use of the system requires registration, as the costs incurred are billed to the current account. In the first few years after the introduction, the user received a personalized card with a personal identification number . The need for a PIN was abolished in autumn 2018; since September 2019, borrowing has been via an app . Up to September 2019, up to four bikes could be rented, currently one bike can be rented for a maximum of 24 hours. The operating company MVG initially offered five different tariff models at 30-minute intervals. Following a tariff adjustment in 2015, there were seven tariffs, and since September 2019 there have been six tariffs.

  • Without annual amount
    • Standard base
    • Advantage Basis (for holders of a subscription, JobTicket or company card)
    • Mainz Studis Basis (for holders of the SemesterTicket of a Mainz university)
  • With an annual fee (the first 60 minutes per trip are free)
    • Standard comfort
    • Advantage comfort (for holders of a subscription, JobTicket or company card)
    • Mainz Studis Komfort (for holders of the SemesterTicket of a Mainz university)

The original plan was to increase prices after the first year. However, since the expansion was not yet completed, MVG decided to keep the introductory prices for the time being. Until the end of 2014, the normal tariff cost 1.00 euros for 30 minutes, and the bus and train tariff 0.50 euros. The annual subscription MVGmeinRad GOLD cost 59.00 euros. On January 1, 2015, the tariffs were increased for the first time. Since the third adjustment on September 5, 2019, the following prices apply:

Tariff system Annual fee first 60 minutes per trip another 30 minutes per trip
Standard base 0.00 1.50 1.50
Advantage base (*) 0.00 0.75 0.75

According to the motto "Your advertisement could be here": "Kraft-Fahrzeug" and "Umwelt-Schooner"

In April 2015, the MVG presented a campaign to advertise the full chain protection boxes as advertising space . For this purpose, these were provided with the slogans: "Heart amplifier", "Company car", "Motor vehicle", "Environment saver" or "Egg swing". The aim is to be able to cover costs by adjusting prices and marketing the advertising space in two to three years at the latest (as of 2015, i.e. 2018 at the latest). A profitable business, however, is not planned.

technology

bikes

The first generation bikes have either baskets or suitcases on the luggage rack .

The bikes called “Paper Bicycle” come from the Scottish designer Nick Lobnitz and were built by the Swiss manufacturer Simpel . They have a hub dynamo and a continuously variable planetary gear transmission . There are no individual gears as in a normal gear shift . A stylized cyclist on the handlebars shows whether the gearshift is set for hilly terrain or for flat stretches. The saddle can be adjusted using the saddle clamp . The handlebar , however, cannot be adjusted.

A new generation of bicycles was presented on March 24, 2016. These now have front baskets with elastic bands instead of the rear baskets and cases, as these have been contaminated again and again. In addition, there is no luggage rack so that no other person can ride on the bike. The gearshift was further developed, the frame profile made even more stable and a new type of double bridge fork introduced.

Mobile app

For the Apple iPhone and other smartphones that are equipped with the Android operating system, there is a free app that shows where the next bike station is, how many free bikes and how many free spaces there are. The rental process has been carried out via this app since September 2019.

Management software

The software platform from ElectricFeel AG is used for system management. The software contains an application for the intelligent redistribution of the fleet, which sends optimal redistribution strategies to the distribution drivers based on integrated forecasting algorithms.

statistics

Transport vehicle for bicycles

In the first months from April to October 2012, over 100,000 rentals were made, which means over 600 journeys a day. This means that Mainz is way ahead of other comparable cities.

After the first year there were 11,000 registered users who rented one of the 960 melon yellow bicycles ( RAL 1028) around 145,000 times at over 100 stations in the city and neighboring communities. Shortly before the first anniversary, there was the first all-time high on April 17, 2013 with 1,200 trips in one day. In 2013 there were 340,000 trips, in 2014 there were 420,000 rentals and in 2015: 479,133 trips, which means that a total of 1,384,711 trips had been made between the start of the system in 2012 and the turn of the year 2015/16. At the end of 2015, there were 110 stations with 760 bikes in operation in the rental system.

The average MVGmeinRad user is around 42 years old. If you add students, the average age drops to 36 years. At around 56 percent, slightly more men than women use the bike rental system.

The most frequently used rental station is at Höfchen , followed by the two systems at the main train station on Schottstrasse and at the West train station. This is followed by stops at Gartenfeldplatz , Frauenlobplatz and in front of the synagogue , Holzstraße and Große Bleiche . These locations are all in the old town or the new town. The bikes are also gladly taken for one-way trips from the higher stations, for example the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , to go downhill into the city center. In July 2013, more than 1,110 bikes were removed from the boxes on campus, but only about half of the rental bikes were returned there. With almost 45 percent, students represent an important target group for the MVG. Therefore, a third rental station was inaugurated on the university campus in January 2016, so there are seven stations in the vicinity of the university.

In April 2015, the one millionth bike ride was celebrated in three years. On a summer day in 2015 there was a new daily record with 2,600 trips. In total, there were almost half a million rentals in 2015.

Award

Even before it was implemented, the city of Mainz and the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft won first place in the nationwide competition “Innovative Public Bicycle Rental Systems” in 2009 , in which 44 applicants took part.

“The model of the city of Mainz is characterized by an economically and organizationally convincing operator concept by the municipal public transport company. In addition to a very high station density (120 stations on 11 km²), the system provides for customer-friendly access using a chip card and the integration of all public transport season ticket holders via a heavily discounted annual rate. "

In addition to Mainz, another five bike rental projects also received funding totaling 12.7 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development between 2009 and 2012 : Nextbike for the NorisBike projects in Nuremberg, metropolradruhr in the Ruhr metropolitan area, UsedomRad in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district as well as the Call-a-Bike offers e-Call a Bike in Stuttgart and Konrad in Kassel.

Incidents

Property damage of at least 17,000 euros has occurred since May 27, 2013, when unknown perpetrators destroyed the locking mechanism and the steel springs of the removal boxes at twelve stations and stole 26 rental bikes. In the following days and weeks there was further damage. A total of 40 wheels were broken out of the holder, 32 remained with the attempt. In addition, there is damage to the rental stations.

At the beginning of July 2013, unknown perpetrators stole three metal plates weighing 600 kilograms from the Stadtwerke site. These plates serve as floor plates for the bicycle stations.

On 6./7. In July 2013, several suspects, including three young people and four adolescent and four adult suspects, were caught red-handed trying to tamper with a rental station.

By the end of July 2013, all but one of the bikes had been found.

At the beginning of December 2013, several stations and bikes in Mainz-Kastel and Mainz-Kostheim as well as at the Rheingoldhalle were vandalized.

Other providers in Mainz

In addition to the almost nationwide MVGmeinRad network, Deutsche Bahn has been offering the option of renting one of 15 bicycles around the clock from March to mid-December with its Call a Bike at the main station since August 2008. Registered Call-a-Bike customers from other cities can use this offer directly. A disadvantage is that borrowing and returning items are only possible at the station at the train station.

Furthermore, bicycle dealers also offer rental bicycles, mainly for day trippers and tourists.
