A capstan system - derived from spill - is a horizontally or vertically arranged hand or motor-operated winch , which is mostly used in connection with a steel cable guided over several guide and deflection pulleys as a transport aid. For example, spill systems are installed next to railroad tracks on loading facilities or in factories and warehouses in order to be able to move rail vehicles without using a locomotive.
