history

The first hammer forge was probably built in 1482 on the course of the Ohra . In 1592 the facility was bought by Tobias Albrecht. Since then it has been called the Tobiashammer . Until 1816 the Tobiashammer was owned by the Albrecht family, who sold the system that year. After that, the owners changed more often. From the middle of the 19th century, the production facilities were expanded significantly. A sheet rolling mill and a second hammer mill were built. The office building, built in 1882, now serves as a hammer tavern .

In 1972 the old, then dilapidated hammer from private ownership was bought by what was then the Ohrdruf steel forming plant.
In 1983 the Tobiashammer was opened to the public as a display facility.

It comes from the former Maxhütte Unterwellenborn and was shut down in 1985. Fully functional, it is put into operation for guided tours.

The forge symposium, which has been held annually since the opening in 1983, is a specialty. B. 2009 the "Homage to Fritz Kühn " with art blacksmiths from three continents.
