Railway stations in Thuringia |
Arnstadt central station is a station of the Deutsche Bahn in Arnstadt ( Thuringia ). It is the largest train station in the Ilm district and one of four main train stations in Thuringia. It includes the passenger station, the freight station and, as shunting districts, the former Arnstadt Ost station and the siding to the “Erfurter Kreuz” industrial estate. In the city of Arnstadt there is also the Arnstadt Süd stop on the route to Suhl or Ilmenau.
The main station is the junction of the Neudietendorf – Ritschenhausen railway lines (part of the Erfurt – Arnstadt – Suhl – Meiningen / Würzburg line), Erfurt – Ilmenau and Arnstadt – Saalfeld .
history
The station was put into operation on May 16, 1867. At that time it was the end point of the route from Erfurt in the north. In 1879 the connection to Plaue - Ilmenau followed and in 1894 the line to Saalfeld. The Plaue – Ritschenhausen railway, which crosses the Thuringian Forest, was completed in 1884. In 1911 the route in the city area was increased. In addition, there was the small train to Ichtershausen between 1885 and 1967 . This branch line, which was privately owned before nationalization, had its own train station on the south-eastern side of the crossing of the former B4 called "Ichtershäuser Bahnhof", later referred to as Arnstadt Ost.
Before the Second World War, long-distance trains from Berlin to Stuttgart / Tübingen stopped in Arnstadt . Among other things, Arnstadt Hbf. (As the station has been called since 1924) stopped the D 14 from Berlin Anhalter Bahnhof to Rome via Stuttgart , Zurich HB and Chiasso . Due to the division of Germany , the station subsequently lost its importance. However, there were still trains to Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig , Suhl and Meiningen as well as long-distance connections to Berlin , Cottbus , Erfurt , Dresden , Görlitz , Halle (Saale) , Leipzig , Magdeburg , Rostock and Stralsund . In 1984 the 11 km long railway line between Neudietendorf and Arnstadt Hbf was electrified in order to be able to change locomotives in Arnstadt and thus relieve the main station in Erfurt. As a result, from May 15 of the same year, Arnstadt was the only district town next to Meiningen and Zwickau to be connected to the DR's city express network. the Ex 150 "Rennsteig" to Berlin-Lichtenberg and in the evening the Ex 157 to Meiningen. This section of the route is one of the few in Germany where the overhead line has been dismantled since 1996 , as there are no longer any (long-distance) trains going beyond Erfurt and connections from Saalfeld and Meiningen come from non-electrified areas anyway. The pair of interregional trains (Berlin–) Erfurt – Stuttgart with a stop in Arnstadt was discontinued in the summer of 1997.
A depot was also connected to the Arnstadt main station . Today it functions as the Arnstadt / historical railway depot and manages all steam locomotives in central Germany.
