The Ilmenau station is one of six stations in Ilmenau city, one of three railway stations of the city and used to be a station of II. Class. In the region, the station is sometimes referred to as Ilmenau Hauptbahnhof because of its greater importance compared to the other stations , although it never officially carried this addition.

The Ilmenau train station is located at a height of 478.46 meters southeast of the city center. It is bordered to the south by Langewiesener Straße (L1140, formerly B 88 ). The Neuhäuser Weg runs to the east and the Ilmenau main road (L3044, formerly B 4 / B 88 ) Friedrich-Ebert-Straße to the west . To the north, the station area is only bordered by Bücheloher Strasse (L 3087, formerly B 87 ), located about one kilometer north of the station building . In the southern part, the station is raised about two meters. The material from the breakthroughs at Roda was used.

Other stations in the city are Ilmenau-Roda , Ilmenau Pörlitzer Höhe , Ilmenau Bad , Manebach and Stützerbach . There is also the Ilmenau-Wolfsberg train station on the Nuremberg – Erfurt high-speed line . If this was initially planned as a passenger station, it ultimately only became a depot . The Grenzhammer , Langewiesen , Gehren Stadt , Gehren and Möhrenbach stations were on the dismantled route to Großbreitenbach .

Track systems

Today there are two platforms with 3 tracks in the Ilmenau train station , where track 1 is directly at the station building (house platform ) and tracks 2 and 3 form an island platform . Track 1 is mainly used for passenger traffic to Erfurt , track 2 has also been used for individual trains to Erfurt since December 2017, while track 3 is no longer used for regular scheduled services. The steam locomotive journeys to the Rennsteig also begin on track 2 and track 3 ( stump track ) is currently not used for passenger traffic and is mainly used as a siding.

To the east of the three named tracks there used to be two more tracks that were used for freight traffic. These were removed around 2002, but the loading ramp is still clearly visible. There used to be numerous track systems in the northeastern area of the station, which were used for shunting and freight traffic. Three factory tracks branched off directly from the train station: one led to the slaughterhouse, the other to the Galluba & Hofmann porcelain factory (on Neuhäuser Weg) and the third led to the Henneberg porcelain factory about two kilometers away . It was only laid in 1973 and included another freight yard with several tracks on the right-hand side north of the station. In the 1970s, construction began on a new freight yard. Its location was east of the train station on Neuhäuser Weg. In 2006 there was a large open area with remains of track and station lighting systems. It is planned to convert the area into a commercial area.

On the area between track 3 and Langewiesener Straße (former track bed of the line to Großbreitenbach), platform 2 with a height of 55 cm was rebuilt from July 2019 to November 2019 over a length of 95 m. This is barrier-free accessible via Langewiesener Straße. The underpass to the central platform was also renovated.

Subsequent routes

Ilmenau station is located at 19.18 kilometers of the Arnstadt – Plaue – Ilmenau railway line opened in 1879 (km calculated from Plaue station ), which was extended to Themar in 1904 (see also Rennsteigbahn ). It crosses the station from north to south. In 1881 the Ilmenau – Großbreitenbach line was added. The latter led in a south-easterly direction from the train station and is now a cycle path .

building

The Ilmenau train station was built in 1879. It is a relatively simple, red brick building typical of the time. The client was the Prussian State Railways . The three-storey building is very similar to the station buildings of Elgersburg , Plaue and, above all, Arnstadt . A porch was erected on the street side in the 1920s, but it blended well into the building. During the GDR era, the west side (weather side) of the station was clad with red asbestos shingles, which disturbed the originally uniform brick architecture. After the station between 1998 and 2005 was unoccupied, one was in autumn 2005 Service Center of Deutsche Bahn opened. This was closed again in 2008.

The locomotive shed for four locomotives in the northwestern station area and the two signal boxes north and south followed as further station buildings . When the Rennsteigbahn opened in 1904, two platforms and a platform roof were added. Later the underpass from the house platform to tracks 2 and 3 followed, which is now partially closed due to dilapidation. In the course of the timetable change in December 2017, the underpass was reopened for passenger traffic and the platform on track 2 was refurbished and partially reopened.Since then, individual trains have also stopped at this platform as scheduled. The underpass and the platform on track 2 were renovated by November 2019 and track 2 made barrier-free. A building that no longer exists today was the long goods shed that adjoined the station building to the north. It was canceled in the 1990s. Today there is a parking lot here.

In the summer of 2010, after the city had bought the house, work began on converting the station building (called Terminal A). It will be supplemented by a few extensions in modern glass architecture (called Terminal B) and will then serve as a commercial building. In addition, the central platform was to be demolished and another commercial building built in its place; these plans were later discarded. The renovation should be completed in mid-2011. However, the completion was delayed. The renovation of the main building and the construction of the extension was followed by a redesign of the area and forecourt, which was completed in spring 2014. In the station building there is currently a waiting hall, a taxi service as well as a bike shop and various offices. In December 2017, the Süd-Thüringen-Bahn opened a ticket office in the train station , as provided for in the tender for the Southern Thuringia diesel network . In July 2017, the construction of a new commercial building (called Terminal C) began opposite the previous Terminal B, which was opened in January 2019, together with a non-public connecting bridge over the railroad tracks to Terminal A.

Train traffic

Today's passenger traffic

The Ilmenau train station is the terminus for the majority of the 26 regional trains in each direction every day, four of which are connected to and from the Rennsteig on weekends . This results in an hourly cycle to the north, with slight travel time adjustments in the morning and evening. This hourly service is reinforced by four weekday express trains that only stop at the two stations in Ilmenau and Arnstadt, as well as in Neudietendorf and Erfurt main train station. To Erfurt main railway station Regional trains just need an hour until the Rennsteig an ample half an hour. The express trains need about three quarters of an hour to Erfurt main station. Diesel multiple units of the Regio-Shuttle type are used , which offer 150 seats and 180 standing places with two traction units . In December 2017, the Süd-Thüringen-Bahn took over operations from the Erfurt Railway . Similarly, the regional trains to Erfurt in December 2017 Arnstadt Hauptbahnhof be with the regional railways from Saalfeld combined .

Rail transport continues to play an important role in Ilmenau, as many of the 7,000 students at the Technical University travel by rail. The Thuringia semester ticket has been available since 2009 , with which students from the TU Ilmenau and other Thuringian universities can use all local transport trains in Thuringia for an initial 24.90 euros (since April 2019 50.88 euros) per semester, previously this only applied to individual ones Routes (including Erfurt – Ilmenau). The number of travelers per day varies between 800 and 1000.

Today's freight traffic

In Ilmenau, rubbish was loaded onto the Rennsteigbahn freight trains until 2016 . He was transported to the waste incineration plant in Leuna . In addition to the daily garbage, the Wolfsberg landfill near Wümbach is slowly being removed in this way. Furthermore, there are occasional wooden trains that cross Ilmenau on the way out of the Thuringian Forest . The V 100 diesel locomotive is usually used for freight trains .

Accidents

Train accident in 1972

Shortly before the Ilmenau level crossing, Oehrenstöcker Strasse, a steam tender locomotive derailed in early 1972. Only the locomotive overturned and both double-decker cars remained standing on the rails. There were no injuries. The locomotive's boiler was well heated for the journey in the direction of Rennsteig, so that the pressure reduction started immediately. The passenger cars were withdrawn to the Ilmenau train station. The locomotive was recovered after three days. A railway crane was used for this. Due to the location of the accident locomotive, the crane had to approach the front of the locomotive. The approach was from Meiningen via Themar and Schleusingen.

Train accident on March 13, 2000

On March 13, 2000, a train accident occurred near the Ilmenau train station in which two people were seriously injured. The reason was a defective level crossing at the "Stollen" level crossing. An excavator drove onto the rails, where it was caught by locomotive No. 219 040-3 and dragged along for about 100 meters. The locomotive derailed and was destroyed in the process. The first wagon of the passenger train also derailed, but the passengers were unharmed. The excavator was completely destroyed, but the driver survived seriously injured. As a consequence of the accident, the safety technology at the level crossing was completely renewed, the class 219 on the line was replaced by the class 642 and the speed limit (for trains) at the level crossing was reduced to walking speed.

Station forecourt

The Ilmenau station forecourt was redesigned in 2000. The area was traffic-calmed and a park about 50 meters wide and 200 meters long was created. There are some old trees, hedges, meadows and flower beds. As a "welcome sign", all travelers who leave the train station are greeted by miniature replicas of the Kickelhahnturm and the Goethe House . There is a taxi rank directly in front of the train station. The bus station, which was redesigned at the end of the 1999, begins on the right.

The bus station is located on the northern part of the station forecourt and has six bus platforms as well as a covered waiting area for passengers and parked buses. It is approached by around 300 buses every day. The bus station is the junction for public transport in the southern Ilm district.

As part of the station renovations up to 2014, the area around the station was also completely renovated. The platform, the cobblestone pavement of the forecourt, pedestrian paths and parking spaces have been partially redesigned.
