Roda (until 1952 Roda near Ilmenau ) is a district of the city of Ilmenau in the Ilm district ( Thuringia ).

Roda is located in the source valley of the Reichenbach, 2 km northwest of Ilmenau. The mountains of the Thuringian Forest rise to the south . Roda is about 520 meters above sea level.

history

Roda was first mentioned in a document in 1351. The place used to be characterized by mining . Various ores such as manganese were mined in the Sturmheide to the south . When mining collapsed at the end of the 18th century, the place became impoverished. The place came in 1508 to the office of Ilmenau in the county of Henneberg -Schleusingen and belonged with this to Saxe-Weimar since 1660 , later to Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach .

The church was built between 1573 and around 1630 .

The State Handbook for the Grand Duchy of Saxony from 1840 names the names "Finnroda", "Nagelroda" and Rödlitz as older names for the place to distinguish it from villages of the same name.

In 1879, the construction of the Erfurt – Ilmenau railway with a train station in Roda marked the turning point. Now many glass factories and some metal processing companies settled here. The next crisis came in 1929. The local industry was hit hard by the global economic crisis . This ran into financial problems for the community, which in 1939 forced them to ask the city of Ilmenau to take Roda in. The Ilmenau city administration agreed and also took over the Roda debts. So Roda was incorporated into Ilmenau in 1939. Until 1981 it was the only part of Ilmenau.

Economy and Transport

Many Roda residents commute to work in Ilmenau. The largest company in town is a large furniture store.

Roda is on the former B4 ( Ilmenau - Erfurt ) and on the B 88 ( Ilmenau - Gotha ). Roda has owned a train station on the Erfurt – Ilmenau railway line since 1879 .
