The Sturmheide slopes steeply to the south and east into the city of Ilmenau and the Ilm valley . To the north it falls a little flatter towards Roda . In the west it merges into the 702 meter high Hangeberg .

The mountain is mostly made of beeches . The north-eastern side of the Sturmheide is built up, there is the so-called Ilmenau Upper Town , which was built in the 16th century and served as the living quarters of the miners . The Sonnebad (the first allotment garden in Ilmenau, built in the 1920s) and the Ravené Hut , a vantage point on the summit of the Sturmheide, are located on the Sturmheide. A striking landmark is the old, red and white wind turbine on the Sturmheide, which can be seen from all over the city of Ilmenau. The Sturmheide is the watershed between the Ilm in the south and Gera or Unstrut in the north.

history

The Sturmheide plays a very important role in the history of Ilmenau. The city's mines , in which silver and copper were extracted, were located here from the 14th century to around 1800 . They were the main source of income and the largest employer of the Ilmenau at that time. The metals were processed in the old mint in Ilmenau into Henneberg and later also into Saxon thalers .

The colliery house and the miners' chapel at the foot of the Sturmheide in the old town of Ilmenau are still a reminder of the mining tradition .

Others

Many hiking trails run over the Sturmheide, for example. B. the Goethe hiking trail Ilmenau – Stützerbach and the three Ilmenau mountain trenches (Upper, Middle and Lower). During the mining period, they served as water and thus energy suppliers for the mines, and also for rafting wood from the forests near Manebach and Stützerbach to Ilmenau. An engineering masterpiece is that from the beginning of the upper trench in the Freibachtal near Stützerbach to the town of Ilmenau about 15 kilometers away, a constant gradient of about 90 centimeters over 100 meters was maintained.

The Sturmheide street in Ilmenau is named after the Sturmheide .
