The Freibach is the 6.5 kilometer long main source stream of the Ilm in the Thuringian Forest .

course

It rises between Großem Finsterberg and Schneekopf west of Stützerbach . The southern arm feeds from the Kesselbrunnen near the Mordfleckwiese on the Rennsteig at a height of just over 800 meters. The northern arm of the spring , also known as the Sperberbach , rises directly from the Schmücke at an altitude of about 950 meters. After almost two kilometers, the spring arms unite at a height of 673 meters and then flow in an easterly direction past the Großer Spanntal, Großer Melmtal, Kleine Melmtal and Silbergrund towards Stützerbach. The lower, clear part of the Freibach valley is called the Freibachsgrund . Here the brook flows around the Kleine Rödel and then joins the Taubach and Lengwitz to the Ilm at a height of around 580 meters .
