The Mordfleck ( 823  m above sea level ) in Thuringia is a saddle formation on the Rennsteig between Fichtenkopf ( 944.1  m above sea level ) and Großem Finsterberg ( 944.5  m above sea level ), between the valley of the Langen Lauter in the west and the Freibachtal in the east. It is located on Schmückestrasse L 2632.

origin of the name

The name "Mordfleck" sounds harsh and disreputable and is controversial. Local historians such as Max Kroebel, Johannes Bühring or Ludwig Hertel philosophized about the name of the place, but were never able to clarify it completely. The murder stain is mentioned for the first time in a Henneberg file around 1534. Not far from today's murder stain, a bloody act is said to have occurred according to Bühring around 1523, which is why the place was called the murder stain.

The border between the duchies of Saxony-Gotha and Henneberg also ran at the murder spot and made a bend. Such a kink or angle, point, corner were often referred to as "place" or "spot" in the earlier century. It is also conceivable, however, that the name is derived from a folklore remodeling of Muurflak - Moorfleck (swamp, wet meadow).

August Trinius describes the Mordfleck 1886 as follows: " A poetic hike back and forth, up and down, through this forest-green headwaters of the Ilm , whose water veins almost all arise near the Mordfleckwiese, between Schmücke and Finsterberg."

On the saddle of the Mordflecks, whose magnificent, sloping meadow is covered from June to August by the glowing yellow flowers of Wohlverleih ( Arnica montana ), according to an untrusted legend, a murderous battle is said to have raged in the Peasant War. Unspecified rumors fired the imagination and the murder stain was repeatedly associated with murderous events.
