Railway stations in Thuringia

The Ilmenau-Wolfsberg station is a depot on the Nuremberg – Erfurt high-speed line in the Thuringian city of Ilmenau . It is located around five kilometers east of the core town of Ilmenau in the district of Wümbach . The station, located at route kilometer 154.2, was initially planned as a passenger station for interregional trains. After a change of plan in 2011, the station was put into operation in December 2017 as a pure overtaking station.

construction

The station is part of the construction or plan approval section 2.2 of the new line and is mainly located in a deep cut .

According to the status of the planning approval (around 1995), two reverse overtaking tracks with an island platform were planned in the normal direction of travel Nuremberg . A single passing track with an outside platform was to be created for the normal direction of travel in Erfurt . A double track change (with four switches each) was planned to the north and south of the passing tracks . Except for the platforms, the planning was implemented accordingly.

The railway system should have a longitudinal incline of 2.059 to 2.483 per thousand. At route kilometer 154.39, a 75 m long, three-span farm road bridge leads over the new line. To the north, the Wümbachtalbrücke connects to the train station; the Ilm Valley Bridge follows to the south . There is a substation at the station . From there a traction current line leads to Eischleben .

The two continuous main tracks of the new line can be driven at 300 km / h, the overtaking tracks at 100 km / h, the installation track at 80 km / h and sidings at 40 km / h.

history

The southern end of the station area, with the transition to the Ilmtalbrücke, marked the end of the first construction phase for several years (here: 2006)

Planning as a passenger station

The establishment of a passenger station on the new line in the area of Ilmenau was a stipulation from the regional planning assessment of Thuringia as part of the regional planning procedure . This should ensure a permanent interregional stop. The planning included the connection of the train station via an access road designed for a speed of 50 km / h . In addition, about 90 meters south of the road bridge, at construction kilometer 71.180, a 37 m long, 4.00 m wide and 2.50 m high platform underpass was to be built under the tracks. Platforms should be arranged on the outside of the passing tracks. In addition, barrier-free platform access, storage facilities, lighting and a Park & Ride car park to the west of the railway system with around 80 parking spaces for cars and eight buses were planned.

In mid-2002, Deutsche Bahn planned to set up a direct connection between Erfurt and Ilmenau-Wümbach train station from 2005. In April 2003, the project manager for the new line announced that the station would be built as a passenger station, but for long-distance instead of regional train stops. A type of train comparable to the Interregio should stop at 400 m long platforms. At that time, the 6.2 km long section to the Ilm Valley Bridge was under construction. In February 2007, the project manager for the new line announced that a train station for local passenger transport would be built, where regional trains could stop at 200 km / h, for example.

In December 2010, mayors between Erfurt and Coburg spoke out in favor of setting up the stop. The Thuringian Ministry of Transport announced that it would definitely not order any regional traffic on the new line; a train station outside of a city makes no sense. At this point in time, Deutsche Bahn was about to submit a plan change application to transform the passenger station into a purely overtaking station.

Due to a change in plan, the Ilmenau-Wolfsberg passenger station was taken out of planning in 2011. In July 2012, the Ilm district filed a lawsuit against the plan change before the Thuringian Higher Administrative Court . The lawsuit was rejected because, in the view of the court, the Ilm district was not entitled to sue. However, the judgment states "that the contested planning approval amendment decision has expressly obliged the developer to build the railway structures in such a way that the later construction of the passenger station is not excluded".

The community of Wolfsberg spoke out in favor of the stop, while the mayor of Ilmenau, Gerd-Michael Seeber, was critical of the stop because of the competition it had with the existing route to Erfurt . According to DB information, the infrastructure required for passenger train stops can be upgraded later. In 2017, an application for a change in the plan for noise protection was submitted.

Planned passenger train operating program

According to the status of the planning approval , the station should be served by two-hour interregional stops on the Karlsruhe - Nuremberg - Erfurt - Halle - Berlin line with eight trains per day and direction. ICE stops were not planned, even on the edge of the day. With the abolition of the Interregio product by Deutsche Bahn, a gap arose between self-commercial long-distance transport and ordered local transport in the product range. The stop is too insignificant for ICE, the stopping distance too great for a regional express line. According to the planning status of 2007, on the other hand, individual ICE train stops were planned at the edge of the day (morning, evening).

According to representatives of the state of Thuringia and the city of Ilmenau, plans for an offer of regional transport on the high-speed route will not be pursued further on their part. According to Mayor Seeber at a residents' meeting in 2008, technical committees of the city of Ilmenau had spoken out against the planned stop in Wümbach and in favor of expanding the existing route.

With the introduction of a new regional express line Erfurt – Nuremberg, the discussion about a passenger station in Ilmenau Wümbach is revived. In April 2020, the operation of regional traffic in the southern section of the new line, via Coburg, was awarded to DB Regio. As part of the transport contract running from December 2023 to December 2035, five pairs of trains per day are to be run from Coburg to Erfurt. According to its own statements, the state of Thuringia wants to hold talks about the establishment of the stop in May 2020.

In the third expert draft of the Deutschland-Takt presented in June 2020, no stops are planned in the train station.
