List of train stations in Switzerland |
The Chiasso train station is located in the town of Chiasso in the Swiss canton of Ticino and border station between Switzerland and Italy . Its Italian counterpart is the Como San Giovanni train station . It is owned by the Swiss Federal Railways and the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and is served by SBB, TILO and Trenord trains. The southernmost train station in Switzerland is only a few meters away from the national border .
history
The station was opened in 1874 when the Ticino valley railways between Biasca and Chiasso or Locarno went into operation. In September 1876 the station received cross-border traffic when the Chiasso – Como section, the last section of the Chiasso – Milan line, went into operation. With the opening of the Gotthard tunnel and the Gotthard railway in 1882, the station became part of the continuous north-south connection between Germany, German-speaking Switzerland, Ticino and Italy.
With the elimination of the locomotive change after the introduction of the Alstom ETR 470 , no Cisalpino trains have stopped in Chiasso since 1999 , but the connections made with conventional train material did. After the complete changeover of all cross-border trains to railcars, the stop in Chiasso was originally supposed to be dropped completely, but was retained after protests by politicians. Furthermore, a Cisalpino was blocked by residents of Chiasso in the train station. At that time, 54 jobs at the station were also lost. Since then, Chiasso has served as a boarding point for border controls on the train.
The station lost a large part of its long-distance traffic connections as early as 2004 when the express trains to Basel / Zurich / Schaffhausen were switched to InterRegios and were led to Locarno . On the Bellinzona – Chiasso section, where they stopped at all stations between Lamone-Cadempino and Chiasso, they were replaced by the S10 of the Ticino S-Bahn . Today only three of these InterRegio train pairs run to Chiasso. Since December 2010, the station has also been served by a daily pair of Basel – Venice trains with the new Alstom ETR 610 .
After Switzerland joined the Schengen area in 2008, the official border control was lifted, the Italian Guardia di Finanza and the Swiss border guards kept their offices and control posts at the train station. Border control is now carried out on the trains between Como San Giovanni and Chiasso when they cross the Monte Olimpino 1 tunnel .
