Albin Schaedel (born September 14, 1905 in Igelshieb ; † November 18, 1999 in Neuhaus am Rennweg ) was an innovative Thuringian glass artist with an international reputation.

Live and act

Albin Schaedel came from a family with a 200-year tradition in glass production. His father was a glass bead maker. From 1912 to 1920 Schaedel attended elementary school in Neuhaus. Then he was a glass bead maker in his father's workshop, began an apprenticeship in 1924 and was a journeyman with Edmund Müller in Neuhaus from 1927. Since 1934 Schaedel worked as a freelance art glass blower. From 1934 to 1938 he sat in on the painter and graphic artist Prof. Karl Staudinger in Sonneberg . From 1940 to 1945 Schaedel was a soldier. In 1949 he was awarded the handicraft quality mark. In 1952 he passed the master's examination and was accepted into the examination committee for master glass blowers and the Association of Visual Artists. In 1954, Schaedel moved with his apartment and workshop to Arnstadt , "his second hometown". In 1980 he had to stop working in front of the glass flame for health reasons.

Schaedel was a very experimental glass artist. He developed the design of blown vessels in front of the lamp, among other things through the application of the assembly technique ("Schaedeltechnik") to a sophisticated art. He was one of the most productive and influential glass artists of his time.

Albin Schaedel wrote about himself: "And when the visitors have bright eyes, find happy words, that is more than money for me. Then the work has found meaning, life was not in vain ...".

On the occasion of his 85th birthday, an autobiographical text was published in 1990, edited by Erika Schaedel, completed on April 15, 1987, which describes in detail Albin Schaedel’s living conditions and artistic career.

Schaedel was married twice. His first wife died early. But his second wife also died before him. His grave is also in Neuhaus, Schaedel's birthplace.
