The armorer was a craftsman and blacksmith who made blades , helmets , armor , mail shirts , shields, and firearms .

In addition to the master's signature or master's mark , the official inspection mark appeared in the late 14th century , attesting to the material quality of the weapon. Up until the second half of the 19th century there was the title of blacksmith and armorer. Not every blacksmith was allowed to make weapons. This privilege was reserved for the manor smiths.

The armourer is one of the two symbolic figures of the "city of blades" Solingen , along with the woman who is liëwer .

The patron saints of the armory are Mauritius and William of Aquitaine and Catherine of Alexandria .
