Robert Oertel

Robert Oertel (born October 30, 1907 in Leipzig , † December 1, 1981 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German art historian .

Life

Oertel completed his Abitur in 1927 at the Thomas School in Leipzig . He studied art history , archeology and philology at the University of Leipzig , the University of Vienna , the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Hamburg . He received his doctorate in 1932 under Hans Jantzen with a dissertation on "The early works of Masaccio " . Afterwards he worked at the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg i.Br. From 1932 to 1933 he was a fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome . In 1933 he became an assistant at Jantzen. He received instruction from Ernst Kühnel , Wolfgang Volbach , Friedrich Winkler and Willy Kurth . From 1935 to 1939 he was head of the photo library at the Art History Institute in Florence . He later became an assistant to Hans Posse and Hermann Voss at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. He was involved in the “ special order Linz ”.

He completed his habilitation in 1948 and became a professor in 1955 . From 1964 to 1973 he was director of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie .
