Tessalit ( Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⵉⵙⵙⴰⵍⵉⵜ Tissalit ) is a municipality and the administrative center of the same circle Tessalit in the Kidal region in Mali .

geography

The place is located in an oasis of the Sahara near the border with Algeria .

Demographics

Tessalit has 5,739 inhabitants. The population consists mainly of Tuaregs . In early February 2012, rebels from the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) captured Tessalit. On February 9, 2013, French and African troops captured Tessalit.

Infrastructure

The place has a landing strip and is located on the Tanezrouft runway , which connects Gao in Mali with Reggane in Algeria.

Town twinning

Tessalit is related to the French Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne .

Culture

Tessalit is the hometown of the band Tinariwen .
