Friedrich Horst Winkler (born March 5, 1888 in Prehna , Altenburger Land district , † February 23, 1965 in West Berlin ) was a German art historian and museum director.

Life

Friedrich Winkler studied at the universities of Vienna , Berlin and Freiburg im Breisgau and in 1913 he decided to study in Berlin with a dissertation with Wilhelm Vöge on the master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden . He then worked as a volunteer in the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden , but was drafted after a short time in the First World War. In 1915, Winkler became a trainee under Wilhelm von Bode at the central library of the Berlin museums and later became head of the library. In 1933 he was appointed director of the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett of the State Museums and held this position until his retirement.

Alongside Max J. Friedländer , with whom he temporarily worked in Berlin, Winkler was one of the most important experts on old Dutch painting and one of the great masters of Dürer's time. Through his research and acquisitions, he has enormously expanded his knowledge of these epochs. His monographs on Hugo van der Goes and Albrecht Dürer have remained fundamental to this day.

Honors

Winkler was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1950 . In March 1953 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class . In 1958 he received a commemorative publication on his 70th birthday .
