Hellmut Mehnert (born February 22, 1928 in Leipzig ) is a German internist and diabetologist.

Life

Mehnert attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig . Immediately after graduating from high school in 1946, he was arrested as a high school graduate by the NKVD and deported to Soviet special camp No. 1 in Mühlberg , which he was only able to leave in July 1948. From 1949 he studied human medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . 1950 Corps Suevia Munich recipiert , he excelled at being a senior and once as a Cub Major from. He passed the state examination in 1954 and was awarded a Dr. med. From 1955 to 1965 he worked at the Medical Polyclinic of the LMU Munich with Walter Seitz. In 1957 he studied as a visiting physician with Elliott P. Joslin at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. Specialist since 1961 , he completed his habilitation in internal medicine in 1963 . From 1966 to 1993 he was chief physician of the III. Medical department of the Schwabing Clinic .

After five years as a private lecturer , he became an adjunct professor in 1968 and personal associate professor at the LMU Munich in 1974 . From 1964 to 1990 he was the permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany on the Diabetes Expert Committee of the World Health Organization . From 1972 to 1974 he was chairman of the Munich Medical Association. From 1972 to 1973 he was President of the German Diabetes Society and in 1975 of the Congress of the European Diabetes Society. From 1975 to 1982 he was Vice President of the International Diabetes Association. From 1975 to 1991 he was Medical Director of the Munich-Schwabing Hospital . In 1980/81 he was President of the German Society for Internal Medicine . In 1996 he became a corresponding member of the Saxon Society for Internal Medicine. In 1998 the Hellmut Mehnert Prize of the German Diabetes Union was awarded.
