Leopold Lichtwitz Medal
The Leopold Lichtwitz Medal is an award from the German Society for Internal Medicine (DGIM). It replaces the Gustav von Bergmann Medal and has been awarded since 2014.
In 2013 the DGIM reassessed the life performance of miners. As vice dean at the Berlin Charité in 1933, he implemented in the faculty that all Jews were released. The Leopold Lichtwitz Medal is awarded in memory of the Jew Leopold Lichtwitz (1876–1943), who was chairman of the DGIM in 1933 but - like many other Jews - had to leave the company under pressure from the board.
The Leopold Lichtwitz Medal honors “people who have distinguished themselves to an exceptional degree through their work and their commitment to the interests of internal medicine and the DGIM. In this way, the professional society honors great doctors, exceptional clinical teachers and researchers for their life's work. She expresses her thanks and appreciation to those people who have advanced the entire field of internal medicine and its specialist society. "
