Jürgen Meyer (doctor)

Jürgen Meyer (born January 16, 1939 in Düsseldorf ) is a German cardiologist .

Meyer studied medicine from 1959 to 1964 with subsequent specialist training in cardiology. In 1972 he completed his habilitation and in 1975 became an adjunct professor at RWTH Aachen University . In 1976 he became a professor at the University of Mainz . There he was director of the 2nd Medical Clinic.

Meyer expanded the area of ​​balloon dilatation PCTA (introduced in 1977 by Andreas Grüntzig ) from the area of ​​stable coronary heart diseases to patients with acute coronary syndrome . This happened at a time when balloon catheters were still relatively primitive, there was no wide range of anti-thrombotic agents, and stents had not yet been developed.

From 2004 to 2010 he was President of the Society for Advances in Internal Medicine and received its Ludwig Heilmeyer Medal. From 1995 to 1997 he was President of the German Society for Cardiology and 2000/2001 Chairman of the German Society for Internal Medicine . In 2007 he received the Carl Ludwig Medal of Honor and in 2018 the Leopold Lichtwitz Medal .
