Professional Association of German Internists
The professional association of German internists e. V. was founded in Wiesbaden in 1959 and, with around 23,000 members, is one of the three largest medical associations in Germany and, after the German Association of General Practitioners, Europe's second largest specialist association.
The association safeguards, promotes and represents the social and professional interests and other concerns of German internists. The BDI is organized in 17 regional associations, sections ( angiology , endocrinology , gastroenterology , geriatrics , hematology and internal oncology , infectiology , cardiology , nephrology , pulmonology , rheumatology ), working groups (internal specialists, general practitioners, internal specialists in hospitals, intensive care, Radiology and nuclear medicine, medical quality management) and working groups (e.g. occupational / industrial medicine) with highly qualified specialists are available to advise individual internists on specific questions.
In particular, the association promotes professional training for internal medicine specialists and annually organizes numerous international and regional BDI congresses and advanced training events. To this end, the BDI works closely with the German Society for Internal Medicine .
The association assists its members in an advisory capacity on all legal questions relating to statutory health insurance and professional ethics, performance audits, fees and recourse to pharmaceuticals, employment contracts and further training.
The office is located in Wiesbaden, and cardiologist Hans Martin Hoffmeister became the successor to Hans-Friedrich Spies (Frankfurt a. M.) in 2019. The managing director is Tilo Radau.
Günther Budelmann Medal
The professional association of German internists e. V. awards the Günther Budelmann Medal as the highest honor , which is named after the association's first president.
