The Golbey lock staircase ( French Chaîne d'écluses de Golbey ) is a staircase of locks with short stops on the Canal des Vosges . It is located in the French commune of Golbey in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region .

history

The building was in the years 1876 to 1880 as part of the then Canal de l'Est mentioned navigation canal built. The construction of the canal was a direct result of the Franco-Prussian War , which ended in 1871 for France with the loss of Alsace and parts of Lorraine . In order to replace the waterways running there in a north-south direction, a replacement was created in the remaining territory: the Canal de l'Est . For water supply of the channel section sector Sud was Reservoir Bouzey built in 1895 but broke and caused by its tidal wave an enormous disaster in the Moselle Valley. It has since been rebuilt and is still in service.

technical infrastructure

The lock staircase consists of 15 at a distance of 150 to 300 meters successive locks which overcome to a total distance of 3.2 kilometers a height of around 44 meters. In this way the ascent from the valley of the Moselle to the apex of the canal towards Saône is accomplished. The numbering of the locks begins at the apex posture at Bois-l'Abbé with lock 1M ( M means: Moselle-sided) and ends with lock 15M ( Olie ). The branch canal to Épinal , which crosses the Moselle with a canal bridge , also flows between the two locks 14M and 15M . The dimensions of the locks correspond to the Freycinet dimensions, so the route can only be used by peniches or sports boats . Originally all of the systems had to be operated manually, but were automated in 1999 and have since been remotely controlled from a central control center. The passage of the lock stairs now only takes 3 hours for pleasure craft and 3½ hours for barges. Operation and maintenance are carried out by the state waterway administration Voies Navigables de France (VNF).
