Trough bridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A trough bridge is a type of bridge in which the deck slab is not arranged above the longitudinal girders, like a deck bridge, but between the main girders and is lower than the top edge of the main girders. Trough bridges are characterized by a low construction height and are used, among other things, for railway overpasses or for overpasses of footpaths and bike paths over streams or small rivers.

In southern Germany earlier trough bridges were also Brückkanal or Bruck channel called.

There are also bridges for inland navigation , which, regardless of their construction, are also referred to as trough bridges. These canals lead over rivers, roads or other obstacles and consist of a trough filled with water. They are also known as canal bridges . The largest bridge of this type is the 918 meter long Magdeburg Canal Bridge , part of the waterway crossing near Magdeburg . There the Mittelland Canal leads over the Elbe . Much older, and with a length of 662.69 meters until the opening of the Magdeburg waterway cross, the largest trough bridge in Europe, are the Briare canal bridge , which was opened in 1896 ( Center-Val de Loire region in France ; the Canal Lateral à la Loire runs over the Loire ). and the 35 meter high and 305 meter long Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in North Wales , which was constructed by Thomas Telford in the late 18th century and opened in 1805 after ten years of construction. The Barton Aqueduct in the Bridgewater Canal over the River Irwell in the north-east of England , completed in 1761, is even older , replaced in 1893 by a movable trough bridge, the Barton Swing Aqueduct .

Works canals, which branch off from a meandering river, often lead via trough bridges to maintain the slight gradient.

In Austria, a total of sixteen trough bridges were built over the Wiener Neustädter Canal in the 19th century , seven of which are still in operation today. Exactly this channel ran in a (no longer existing) wooden trough over the Leitha. In Austria, however, the trough bridges are also referred to as aqueducts .
