The Barton Aqueduct 1891

The Barton Aqueduct was an aqueduct that crossed the River Irwell at Barton in Greater Manchester along the Bridgewater Canal .

The aqueduct was designed by James Brindley in 1761 . The stone-built aqueduct with a height of 13 m was considered one of the seven wonders of the world of canal construction. When the Manchester Ship Canal was built, the passage for the canal was too low and the aqueduct was demolished in 1893 and replaced by the Barton Swing Aqueduct .
