The canal bridge Digoin (fr: Pont-canal de Digoin) is a trough bridge on the outskirts of the French city of Digoin in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . On it the Canal latéral à la Loire crosses the lower Loire River .

history

Since the upper Loire was not without problems for shipping due to its irregular water level, a side canal running parallel to the river was built between 1827 and 1838 . The Canal latéral à la Loire is also the link between the Canal de Briare and the Canal du Center . Inland vessels can travel from the English Channel via Paris and Lyon to the Mediterranean via four consecutive canals .

Under the direction of Jean Joseph Pierre Vigoureux , the engineer Adolphe Jullien built one of the first large canal bridges in France at Digoin from 1834 . It was completed in 1837 and opened to shipping at the same time the canal was opened. In 1870 the bridge was widened. From 1890 to 1896, it was to adjust to the dimensions of vessels of Freycinet class by Léonce-Abel Mazoyer revised again, the water depth was increased by the increase of the trough walls.

description

The 243 m long bridge was built from hewn stone, its eleven arches each have a clear width of 16 m at the base. The ten pillars are anchored three meters below the low water level of the Loire at the bottom of the river and each 9 m wide at the foot of the arches.

The trough is 6 m wide and 2.30 m deep, its bottom is 8.30 m above the Loire. On both sides it is lined with a 1.75 m wide towpath . Lock no. 1 (Ècluse de Digoin) connects immediately to the south of the bridge.
