Karl Ludwig (Nassau-Saarbrücken)
Karl Ludwig Count of Nassau-Saarbrücken (born January 6, 1665 in Saarbrücken , † December 6, 1723 in Idstein ) was the son of Count Gustav Adolf of Nassau-Saarbrücken and Eleonore Clara , born Countess of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein.
Life
He was first raised by his mother's brother, Wolfgang Julius von Hohenlohe-Neuenstein , and continued his studies in Tübingen and Paris .
In the Great Turkish War he served as an officer in the army of Emperor Leopold I.
When his brother Ludwig Crato died in 1713, he took over the government in Nassau-Saarbrücken . In the same year he married Christiane Charlotte von Nassau-Ottweiler , the daughter of his cousin Friedrich Ludwig von Nassau-Ottweiler .
During his reign he promoted the industrialization of his country. In the Warndt , he expanded the glass trade, which was established under Ludwig II by the settlement of Huguenots . In Sulzbach / Saar he rebuilt the salt works from 1719 and had a graduation tower built. The newly founded town of Karlingen was named after him (now in French: Carling ).
When his second cousin, Georg August Samuel von Nassau-Idstein , died in 1721, he took over government affairs in Nassau-Idstein-Wiesbaden together with his father-in-law and cousin, Friedrich Ludwig von Nassau-Ottweiler. To do this, he briefly moved the residence to Wiesbaden in 1722, but returned to Saarbrücken in the same year and moved to Idstein the following year. There he died in 1723 and was buried on December 21st in the castle church of Idstein. A tomb in the castle church in Saarbrücken commemorates him.
Since his two sons died in infancy, the rule in Nassau-Saarbrücken passed to his father-in-law Friedrich Ludwig von Nassau-Ottweiler.
