Heinrich Ludwig of Nassau-Saarbrücken

Heinrich Ludwig Karl Albrecht of Nassau-Saarbrücken (born March 9, 1768 in Saarbrücken , † April 27, 1797 near Cadolzburg ) was the no longer ruling Prince of Nassau-Saarbrücken , as the country was occupied by French revolutionary troops from 1793.

Life

He was the only son of Prince Ludwig von Nassau-Saarbrücken from his marriage to Princess Wilhelmine von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1751–1780). The marriage was unhappy, so that Wilhelmine retired to Halberg Castle and raised their son there.

He studied physics first at the University of Strasbourg and from 1782 to 1785 in Göttingen . Then he traveled: in 1786 he was in Berlin and in the spring of 1787 in Italy .

On May 14, 1793, he had to flee from the French from Neunkirchen Castle and entered Prussian military service. He had to watch as his ancestral castle went up in flames in October 1793 . On November 14, 1793 he became a colonel in the Prussian cavalry. In 1794 his father died and he inherited the prince. But already in 1797 he died after falling from his horse near his asylum castle Cadolzburg .

In his will, Heinrich had designated the Saarbrücken Halberg as the place of his last resting place in memory of his childhood. The ( baroque ) castle "Monplaisir" built by Count Ludwig Kraft von Nassau-Saarbrücken was in ruins as a result of the destruction in the First Coalition War , and revolutionary France still occupied the territory. That is why Heinrich's body was buried in Cadolzburg. It was not until 1976 that the "Friends of Hereditary Prince Heinrich" initiative made it possible to transfer and reburial his bones on the Halberg. An obelisk at the end of the access road to today's ( historic ) Halberg Castle marks the place.

family

He married on October 6, 1785 Marie Françoise Maximilienne de Montbarrey (born November 2, 1761 - February 2, 1838) daughter of Alexandre-Marie-Léonor de Saint-Mauris de Montbarrey . The marriage remained childless. The prince title therefore fell to Karl Wilhelm von Nassau-Usingen , a cousin of his father, after Heinrich Ludwig's death .
