history
Aßweiler is first mentioned in a document in 1262. In a document from the Werschweiler monastery , a Dieterich, a knight of Bießen, is confirmed that he has received grain and money from his income in various villages, including Aßweiler.
On July 28, 1421, the “ free court of Aßweiler ” is mentioned in the “ Weisthum des Hochgericht Ormesheim ” zu Erfweiler . At the end of the Middle Ages the area belonged to the community of Seelbach , in the 16th and 17th centuries it was first owned by the Lords of Bitsch, called Gentersberger, and then by the Lords of Eltz . From these, the barons and later Counts von der Leyen acquired the ban in 1660 , under whose administration the small town remained until the French Revolution . In 1783, Aßweiler had just 88 inhabitants, including 10 who were required to pay a fee.
Originally the place was dominated by agriculture, later - in the middle of the 20th century - almost 85 percent of the inhabitants worked in the nearby coal mines and smelting works.
As part of the Saarland territorial and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Aßweiler was assigned to the city of Blieskastel on January 1, 1974 .

The St. Andrew's cross symbolizes the through streets that cross in the center of Aßweiler, the golden background stands for grain fields and thus for the former agricultural character of the place. The silver pole on a blue background refers to the family coat of arms of the Counts von der Leyen , to whose domain Aßweiler belonged for a long time.
Worth seeing
Functional buildings, new buildings and the “Rondell”, the roundabout where the connecting roads from Niederwürzbach and Ommersheim meet the B 423 , dominate the townscape. On Saar-Pfalz-Straße, the section of the B 423 in the village, there are some farmhouses from the 18th century as well as a wayside cross from 1814. The Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin is an impressive post-war building from 1952/53 (architect: Wilhelm Schulte II. ). The local Catholics belong to the parish of Biesingen, the Protestants of the Blieskastel parish.
