Breitfurt (in the local dialect Bräwadd ) is a district of Blieskastel in the Saar- Palatinate district . Until the end of 1973 Breitfurt was an independent municipality in the district of Homburg .
geography
Breitfurt is located in the Bliesgau around 4.5 km south-southwest of Blieskastel an der Blies at 217 m above sea level. NHN . A few kilometers east-southeast is the Große Kahlenberg , the location of the Alexanderturm observation tower ruins .
history
Two life-size equestrian statues made of sandstone, which were discovered in an old quarry in 1887, date from Roman times. The never completed sculptures are the largest ancient equestrian statues north of the Alps.
Breitfurt was first mentioned in a document in 1271. A mill has existed in Breitfurt since the 15th century , which is now the largest mill west of the Rhine.
As part of the Saarland territorial and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality Breitfurt was assigned to the city of Blieskastel on January 1, 1974 . Breitfurt has been a district and a municipality since then.
Name origin
The place name is derived from a wide ford in the Blies river . Through this, people could easily cross the river at times when there was no bridge.

Worth seeing
In Breitfurt there are several remarkable buildings that are listed as individual monuments in the Saarland's list of monuments . These include the Protestant parish church from the 18th century, an hereditary farm (so-called "Haus Schetting") from 1804 and 1913, several residential buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, the inn "Zur Linde" from 1764, and the former station reception building by 1885.
