geography

Wecklingen is on the country road between Blickweiler and Ballweiler. The common cemetery of Ballweiler and Wecklingen is located on this country road, approx. 500 m west of Wecklingen.

history

Wegkelingen , which means something like "with the people of Wackilo", is the first known name for today's Wecklingen. The name ending "-ingen" refers to the establishment of the town by the Moselle Franconia . The oldest burial ground on the left bank of the Rhine in Germania from the 6th to 7th centuries is located in the Schornwald.

Wecklingen was once its own parish, to which the now much larger neighboring town of Ballweiler also belonged. The oldest written mention of the place dates from the year 1231, in which it is reported that the knight Albert, known as Munt von Ballweiler, is the patron saint of the church in Wecklingen. At the end of the 16th century, the parish of Wecklingen was dissolved (the background was disputes between Catholics and Lutherans ) but rebuilt in 1776, but with its seat in Biesingen . Today nothing can be seen of the former church itself. The building fell into disrepair at the beginning of the 18th century.

In the 16th century, Wecklingen became the headquarters of a line of the Lords von Eltz , who built a representative castle here. The gentlemen from Eltz-Wecklingen were evidently anything but popular. As a result, the castle was looted by farmers. The house then came into the possession of the von der Leyen house in 1659 . However, it was used as a rural estate. During the French Revolution , the castle was again the victim of peasants: it was almost completely demolished. Today there is only a cellar and some rubble. A last landmark from Wecklingen's past was a large archway with the ruler's coat of arms. American troops tore it down in 1945.

From 1816 to 1918 the place belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria and until the end of 1973 it was part of the then independent municipality of Ballweiler . As part of the Saarland territorial and administrative reform , Ballweiler was assigned to the city of Blieskastel on January 1, 1974 .

The surrounding landscape consists of forest areas, open meadows and arable fields and dense orchards. In the village itself there are some old houses and a crossroads from 1877. A special feature is the Kalbenberg nature reserve, which is known for its rare orchid species .
