Böckweiler is a district of Blieskastel in the Saarpfalz district ( Saarland ). Until the end of 1973, Böckweiler was an independent municipality in the Homburg district .

Geographical location

Böckweiler is located in the southeast of the Bliesgau around 7 km south-southeast of Blieskastel at an altitude of 301  m above sea level. NHN . The Great Kahlenberg rises a little to the northwest with the ruins of the Alexander Tower, which was blown up in 1939 (also known as the Böckweiler observation tower ).

history

In the Roman period (1st – 4th century AD), a manor ( villa rustica ) extended in place of today's village center , from which parts of the main building and an auxiliary building could be examined during excavations in 1941/42 and 1949/50.

A large three-aisled basilica was built on the foundations of the ancient complex in the Carolingian period (9th century) , which probably belonged to a small monastery. These structures were replaced by an early Romanesque hall in the 11th century. The three-conch choir, which is still preserved today, comes from an extension in the 12th century.

The ending -weiler suggests that Böckweiler was created in the 7th / 8th centuries. Century. The oldest written evidence of the location is on the back of a document from the Hornbach monastery from 1149, in which the church in Bickwilre is named as the priory of the Hornbach monastery.

As part of the Saarland territorial and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Böckweiler was assigned to the city of Blieskastel on January 1, 1974 . Since then, Böckweiler has been a district and a municipality.

Worth seeing

The Stephanuskirche was built on the remains of a three-aisled Carolingian basilica, the outlines of which are marked by stone slabs. In the Romanesque period, the church was rebuilt and received its current form with the three-conical choir , the floor plan of which describes a regular clover leaf. The choir tower with the three cones is the only component that still dates from the Middle Ages. Not least because of this rare design, it is a gem of Romanesque architecture . It was badly damaged in World War II and rebuilt in 1949/50. The Stephanuskirche is one of the 65 simultaneous churches in Germany and the only one in Saarland.
