Alexander Tower

Ground floor ruins of the Alexander Tower on the Großer Kahlenberg

History and description

On the Großer Kahlenberg, the 26.35 m high viewing tower Alexanderturm was completed in 1893 , which was also called "Böckweiler viewing tower" because of its proximity to Böckweiler and was visible from afar.

Nowadays only the ruins of the tower's ground floor, consisting of thick red sandstone blocks, remain. The square floor plan has a side length of 5 m, on which a stair tower rose, crowned by a viewing platform . The inner diameter of the upper platform was 2.70 m. According to different statements, 141 or 142 steps led up.

The inscription on the sandstone plaque above the former tower entrance on the ground floor recalls the builder, Baron Alexandre Jacomin de Malespine (1821–1893): "" Alexandersthurm "- dedicated to nature lovers by Baron Alexandre Jacomin de Malespine, landowner on the Kirchheimerhof."

A few days after the start of the Second World War , at midnight on September 9-10 , 1939, the Alexander Tower and the Bliesdalheimer Bliesbrücke to the southwest were blown up by Wehrmacht pioneers.

There were already votes in favor of rebuilding the Alexander Tower in the 1950s. Since 2005 the "Fördergemeinschaft Wiederaufbau Alexanderturm e. V. ”to rebuild it true to the original and hopes for financial support.
