The Moselle Franks are one of three groups of Franks in classical historiography . They separated from the Rhine Franks (also called Ripuarier ) in the 5th century and moved west, where they settled on the upper Rhine and the Moselle . The third branch of the Franks, the Salfranken , settled in the Salland on the IJssel and in the Rhine delta, from where they moved via Toxandria to northern Gaul and founded the Franconian Empire under the Merovingians .
Today the speakers of the so-called Moselle Franconian , a dialect group of Middle Franconian that is spoken in the area of the Moselle predominantly in Rhineland-Palatinate , Luxembourg and the northern Saarland , are called Moselfranken .
